Earth is a unique place where living things can survive. Earth provided us with a beautiful environment that helps us to survive. Natural things like air, water and trees together called an environment. Nature has given us air, trees, rivers, mountains and minerals which can be used to ease our livelihood. We can earn money through our hard work but we cannot earn these things when destroyed or exhausted. All these things were in limited amounts on earth. So it is our responsibility to use them carefully and protect them.
Earth has given us life. What can we do for our earth? We can do nothing except showing our gratitude and protecting it from the damages/disasters. For that, a special day is celebrated across the world called Earth day. Earth day gives us an opportunity to express our gratitude to our Earth for its incredible biodiversity and protect it.
Various activities are conducted nationally and internationally to understand our earth's biodiversity and how to protect our nature - plants, animals and the environment.
Earth Day was found by an American Nelson in 1970. He told people how much damage has happened to our earth because of the industrial development. He gathered people and organized several mass movements. Over 20 million Americans came out and protested for eco-conscious society. This movement made the government to listen to their demands and took eco-friendly decisions for the protection of our Earth. This same issue was discussed globally where more than 192 countries supported and encouraged environmental protection.
Earth day is the annual event celebrated on April 22nd every year. It is celebrated across the world to demonstrate how fragile our Earth is and how important it is to protect it. Many people are not aware of serious environmental issue like air pollution, toxic dumps in water which are leading to loss of wilderness. We need to spread the awareness for our environmental protection. We need to promote clean living and a healthy sustainable habitat for people and wildlife.
Now, Earth day is celebrated in more than 192 countries every year. Earth Day was started as a movement and now it is celebrated as a day where people gather and participate in the events like cleaning up rivers, planting trees, etc. The main purpose of the Earth Day is to keep our earth green with trees, decrease pollution, and maintain neat and clean rivers. But our earth is getting damaged day by day with pollution, global warming, ozone depletion, deforestation etc.
1. Causes of pollution on earth are poor disposal of wastes, industrial emissions, use of fossil fuels, deforestation, use of artificial fertilizers in agriculture, etc. Pollution can affect the land, air, water and living beings throughout the world.
2. Because of waste and toxic pollution ozone layer is depleting which is increasing the earth temperature.
3. Increasing population on the earth leading us to cut down the trees and construct buildings, hospitals, schools, roads and cities. This is one of the reasons for the increasing temperature of the earth.
4. If the increase in the temperature continues, it may lead to the melting of Antarctic glaciers causing flooding.
5. With the increase in population food production should also increase. Farmers need to use fertilizers to grow more crops in less time so that food is sufficient for the people. With the use of artificial fertilizers, infertility in the soil, soil erosion, low water level are increasing day by day.
When the earth gets polluted, it is very harmful to human beings, plants and animals.
Variety of plants and animal species become extinct.
Mountains melt causing floods leading to the death of people.
Volcanoes would erupt.
Ozone depletion and global warming.
We need to protect our earth to live a healthy life. Climatic change is the biggest challenge for our next generation and life support systems. So we need to educate people about the awareness of our Earth's protection. Make them understand what we are doing and how we are destroying our earth's biodiversity. We need to spread awareness for the conservation of the endangered species without disturbing our food web. Let us save our earth by following these simple things:
Use the products that can be recycled and reused
Avoid usage of plastic products
Plant wildflowers in your garden
Start an organic vegetable garden in the backyard
Plant trees on both sides of the road and public places
Keep your surroundings neat and clean
Keep the public places clean by using dustbins
Do not throw wastes on the roads while travelling
Use bicycles for travelling short distances
Avoid own transportation whenever possible and use public transport to lessen pollution
Organize cleanups
Celebrating Earth Day in schools, colleges and offices and teaching the people about a healthy and sustainable environment.
We can even organize events to create awareness among people about the protection of our Earth.
By following these simple things can put us away from unexpected diseases and dangerous viruses like Corona which we are facing now.
Every year we celebrate Earth Day with a theme. Theme for this year is 'Climate Action'. Changes in the climate can affect human health, food production, water availability and wildlife. Weather conditions like storms can damage roads, buildings and rail networks. Deforestation, Use of fossil fuels are a few things that are leading to global warming. Global warming is one of the main reasons for climate change. The theme climatic action is chosen to lower greenhouse emissions, build resilience and improve education on climatic change.
Earth Day theme for the year 2016 is 'Trees for the Earth'.
Earth Day theme for the year 2017 is 'Environmental and Climatic Literacy'.
Earth Day theme for the year 2018 is 'End Plastic Pollution'.
Earth Day theme for the year 2019 is 'Protect our Species'.
Earth Day theme for the year 2020 is 'Climate Action.
We can conduct virtual events like environmental lectures, watching and sharing links of eco-related movies. We can start an organic vegetable garden in the backyard or start your kitchen garden. Follow the concept of reduce, recycle and reuse. Keep your surroundings neat and clean.
