It is an international campaign run by World Heart Federation(WHF) and it has become the world’s biggest platform for spreading awareness related to many harmful heart diseases and how we can take actionable steps individually and as a community to prevent this disease.

World Heart Day, World Heart Day organization india

World Heart Day History

The World Heart Day was first celebrated in the year 1999. It is a collective effort of the World Heart  Federation(WHF) and World Health Organization(WHO) so that the common people all around the world should get to know about premature death caused by many heart-related problems and how to avoid such problems.

It was first celebrated on the last Sunday in the month of September till 2010 from the date of its establishment. The first celebration was held on September 24, 2000. And in the year 2011, it was announced on the 29th of September. The idea of celebrating this day was proposed by Antoni Bayes de Luna, president of WHF from 1997-1999. Many non-profit organizations is held on this day since its establishment in the year 2000. The aim of this is to help people by making them conscious about the danger of cardiovascular disease and how many people without having knowledge of these diseases and how to have proper treatment and how to avoid them give up their lives. Around 2.1 million people died only because of a heart problem in India in the year 2015.

World Heart Federation (WHF)

World Heart Federation is an International Non-Government organization. It is located in Geneva, Switzerland. The aim of this organization is to fight globally against heart disease and many related heart problems. The main focus of this organization is on the undeveloped countries and low and middle-income countries which do not have easy access to cure their health-related issues especially related to heart problems. This Organization conducts many annual events, making people aware of this heart problem in the form of seminars, videos in a big theatre, podcast, books, and many more.

The history of how this organization was founded date back to in the year 1946. On this year International Society of Cardiology was founded. And in the year 1970 International Cardiology Federation was founded. Later this both organizations were merged together to form the International Society and Federation of Cardiology (IFSC) in 1978. And then in the year 1998, the name of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology was changed to the World Heart Federation. And then in the year 2000 the World Heart Day campaign was formed and it used to be celebrated on the last Sunday of the month of September. And in the year 2011, it was announced September 29 as the World Heart Day.

There are around 200 members in this organization who are very much dedicated and actively participate in various social events to fight against heart diseases. More than 100 countries around the globe take part in this events. This organization act as a connecting medium between the latest advantages in medical science and heart foundation all around the globe.

According to the survey of the top leading causes of death, it has been found that the number one cause of death is Ischaemic Heart Disease. There are around 8.7 million people died in the year 2015 which corresponds to around 15.5 % of the total death in the World. And the second cause of death is Stroke. There are 6.2 million people died in the year 2015 that correspond to 11.1% of the total death. This is a very critical situation and the World Heart Federation organization is working very hard to reduce this rate. For undeveloped countries and many different countries all around the world, this organization is a hope to cure many heart diseases.

This organization inspires and motivate people to actively take part in the event and put a great number of efforts to make people not too afraid of this heart-related diseases. The members of the organization run many different programs for people to quit their bad habits of smoking, drinking, tobacco and show the importance of healthy living and how we can put in our collective effort to make our society disease-free and to live healthily.

Importance of celebrating Heart Day

In the past thirty years, the death caused by heart disease has been increased significantly. People are dying at a very young age. A young boy in his twenties had died because of a heart attack. He was just 22 years old. There are many families in India and around the world who had lost their loved ones because of this disease. Many people are not aware of how much harm this heart disease is and most important is that people make a mistake in identifying this severe heart problem with normal disease and they think that it will get cured with some medicine. They can’t afford this expensive treatment and so because of this reason many people around the world had lost their lives. This is a very serious issue. In a total of around all the death caused in the year whether it’s road accident, tuberculosis, cancer, and other harmful diseases 26.6% of the death is caused by a heart-related disease. Not only this but many death is caused by bad habits such as smoking, drinking, tobacco, and other things. So it is very important that some initiatives must be taken towards this problem. The purpose of the heart day is to create an international platform where medical professional and common people can come together and discuss their health-related problems. It is a nongovernment moment organization that is supported mostly by NGO’s and it is in collaboration with the World Health Organisation.

On this 29th September people were inspired to get over their addiction and live a healthy and prosperous life. Not only they were inspired but were given proper guidance and treatment on how to live addiction and see the benefit of living a healthy life.To inspire people and to send a quality message to the world a theme is selected. On each and every year different themes are selected. For 2018 the theme is “Make Your Heart Promise”. The purpose of this theme is to make a promise to your heart that you will not eat anything that is harmful to your health. A promise that you will actively involve in the activity that can improve your health. Promise that you will be aware of the things that will harm your health and not indulge in those activities.
